Field Notes

About the notebook

Curiosity,
with a paper trail.

A place for the little observations that make the next investigation easier.

Why keep a notebook?

Because a command is more useful when you remember why you ran it. Field Notes collects short explanations, repeatable checks, and practical questions about everyday computing.

The topics are deliberately close to the work: reading a log, understanding a permission, checking a DNS answer, or making sure a backup can be restored.

The way these notes work

Start with an observation. Change one thing at a time. Test a result that matters. Keep enough context for the next person, even when that person is you a month from now.

A few small principles

A quiet corner of the web

No accounts, comment forms, or analytics. Just ordinary pages, local illustrations, and a little motion. Use the motion control in the footer if you prefer a still page; the site also follows your system's reduced-motion setting.

Commands are examples. Adapt paths and names to your own machine, and read the relevant documentation before applying a change.
