Field Notes

05 / Web

Make curl part of your notebook.

Turn an uncertain web request into a small, repeatable observation.

2 MIN READ · A PRACTICAL FIELD NOTE

A useful request records enough detail to compare with the next one. Start by checking which features your local curl build provides.

Know the tool in front of you

curl --version

Available protocols and TLS features depend on the build. Copying an option from another machine does not guarantee local support.

Separate headers from content

curl --silent --show-error --dump-header headers.txt \
  --output body.html https://example.org/

This keeps the response headers and body in separate files. Check the status and content together; receiving bytes alone does not establish a successful application response.

Put a boundary on the request

curl --connect-timeout 5 --max-time 15 \
  --output /dev/null \
  --write-out '%{http_code} %{time_total}\\n' https://example.org/

The connection timeout limits connection setup. The overall timeout bounds the complete operation, including transfer time.

Change one thing at a time

Keep the URL and method consistent while investigating. Save the command beside the result, and keep certificate verification enabled.
